The cross is a popular symbol in many cultures and has a long history. The Celtic cross is among the best known Irish symbols and therefore makes a popular tattoo. Gothic  crosses are very ornamental. THey are based on the Latin cross tattoos and then adorned with intricate scrolling. The cross can have the addition of barbed wire or swords and daggers.
